Dibs

Privacy policy

Last updated October 15, 2026

Dibs helps friends split a restaurant bill. This page explains what Dibs stores, why, who helps run it, and how to delete it.

What Dibs stores

If you organize a dinner in the iPhone app

  • An account. The app signs you in with an anonymous account that lives on your phone. Adding an email is optional and only saves the account, so you can sign in again on another phone. Supabase Auth, our sign-in service, emails you a 6-digit code to confirm it. If you delete the app without adding an email, that account can't be recovered.
  • Your profile: your display name and your Venmo username, so friends know who to pay.
  • Receipt photos you take or choose. They're kept in private storage. Only you can open them, in the app, through links that expire after a few minutes. Guests never get the photo.
  • What Dibs reads from a receipt: the line items, the restaurant name, the date, and the totals. You can edit them in the app.
  • Your dinners: the dinner name, theme, tip settings, the items, and who is in each dinner.

If you join a dinner

  • The name you enter, the items you claim and how you share them, and any payment you report with "I paid" (the amount).
  • Your browser keeps a guest key for each dinner you join, and the name you last used, in its local storage. That's how reopening the link brings you back as the same guest. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.

Payments

Dibs never moves money and never sees bank or card details. Pay with Venmo opens Venmo with the organizer's Venmo username, the amount, and a note like "Dibs: Taco Night". Venmo handles the payment under its own terms. "I paid" is something you report yourself so the organizer can keep track. Dibs doesn't check it.

What Dibs doesn't do

No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no cookies. Dibs doesn't sell your information or share it for advertising.

Who helps run Dibs

  • Supabase stores the database, handles sign-in, keeps the receipt photos, and sends the live updates when someone claims an item.
  • Anthropic reads a receipt photo when an organizer scans one in the app, and returns the items. Only the image and the instructions for reading it are sent: no names, emails, or account details.
  • Vercel hosts this website and the Dibs API.

Like any online service, they receive standard network information, such as IP addresses, when your device connects.

Scan limits

To keep receipt scanning from being abused, Dibs records each scan with the organizer's account id and a salted hash of the IP address, not the address itself. Records older than two days are deleted the next time anyone scans a receipt.

How long Dibs keeps it

A dinner, its receipt photo, and everything in it stay until the organizer deletes the dinner or deletes their account. Receipt photos don't expire on their own yet.

Deleting your information

Organizers

In the app, go to Profile, then Delete account. Here's what happens:

  • Dinners you organized are deleted for everyone, along with their receipt photos.
  • In other people's dinners, your name becomes "Former guest". Amounts stay the same, so their totals stay right.
  • Your name, Venmo username, and sign-in are deleted.
  • This can't be undone.

You can also ask support to delete your account. Email support@dibssplit.com.

Guests

Ask the organizer to remove you from the dinner. Or contact support with the dinner link and the name you used, and we'll remove you. If the organizer deletes their account, their dinners are deleted too. If you have the app and delete your account, your name in other people's dinners becomes "Former guest".

Children

Dibs isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has used Dibs, contact support and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too.
